IYAF launches The YAFFA’s!

YAFFA’s stands for Youth Arts Festival Film Awards. It sounds cheesy now but in years to come it’ll be as generic as the BAFTA’s (which was the inspiration for the silly name!) YAFFA’s is a youth led project, run by young people for young people. It is a competition that aims to allow all budding film makers, no matter their experience, to create and showcase their creative abilities via two short film categories, using a variety of modern technology.

The categories for 2010 are as follows:

Category 1 is based on the technique of stop-motion filming which is relatively simple to do and allows anyone to have a go with films of up to a minute in length

Category 2 is an anything goes category for those with more experience and their own way of working, with films of up to 5 minutes in length.

All entries will be submitted via the YouTube page http://www.youtube.com/YAFFAs2010 and can be made using anything from a mobile phone or webcam to semi-professional recording equipment. The competition will culminate in an awards ceremony on Sunday 11th July at Kingston College’s Arthur Cotterell Theatre, where the winners will be presented with awards and their films will be showcased to the general public.

Keep your eyes posted to this website and to the YouTube site for online tutorials and detials of workshops to help you make your films!

Volunteer for IYAF 2010

IYAF is looking for a ‘street team’ to assist in a variety of roles throughout the festival.

We need people out on the streets spreading the word, giving out programmes and generally making as much noise about the festival as possible.  We also need volunteers to be Front of House staff at most festival venues and are also looking for volunteer technical teams for most venues (perfect for anyone training in Stage Management, Lighting, Sound etc looking for some practical hands-on experience).

Please e-mail volunteer@iyafestival.org.uk for more details or download the volunteer form here and return to the above email address.

Rick Astley “Rocked the Rose” for IYAF!

11th April 2010 – Rose Theatre

Rick Astley holds the record for being the only male solo artist to have his first 8 singles reach the the top ten in the UK and has sold approximately 40 million records worldwide…. so what next?  An incredible sold out gig at the Rose Theatre which saw Rick performing with his ‘weekend band’ – The Luddites.

The night was phenomenal, with over 800 people singing along to support band the Reptiles & joyously dancing in the aisles at the magnificent sound (and sight) of The Luddites!

The night raised some much needed funds for IYAF and importantly had the audience (who spanned about six generations) cheering, smiling and laughing all night long.

The Seething Festival and the Legend of Lefi Ganderson

63

A wonderful weekend took place on the 27th & 28th February when a whole community came together to redisover the Seething Festival and the Legend of Lefi Ganderson.

The tale of Lefi Ganderson and his battle with the Giant has passed through the ages. Its core narrative appears in many folk tales such as ‘Jack and Beanstalk’ and the classic Norwegian legend ‘De Baby og de Gigantiske’.

But for many scholars the classic tale is still ‘The Goat Boy of Seething’. Unfortunately the telling of the legend stopped in 1927. This was also the last year of the associated ‘Seething Festival’… until now!  The IYAF joined hundreds of members of the community to take part in processions, archeological digs to find the entrance to Lefi ‘s cave, mad hunts for lay lines, the beautiful community play and of course, the traditional burning of the giants head on a bonfire and the eating of jacket potatoes!  Copies of the beautifully written and illustrated children’s book can still be bought for £10 by e-mailing lefithegoatboy@yahoo.co.uk.  All proceeds go the International Youth Arts Festival.

The highlights of the Seething Festival can be seen here…

Audition Opportunity

DSCF2172AUDITION FOR A PLAY AT THE ROSE THEATRE!

“None But Friends” is a play about the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381.  It
will be presented in modern dress at The Rose Theatre as part of the
International Youth Arts Festival in July 2010.

The play is written by Allan Swift and Bob Tomson.  Allan has written
for Hollyoaks, Casualty, EastEnders and The Bill and has directed
numerous plays in London theatres; he is currently lecturing on the
Screenwriting module at Kingston University. Bob Tomson is one the
West End’s most successful/leading directors; he currently has two hit
shows in London: Blood Brothers (which has been running for over
twenty years) and Dreamboats and Petticoats and he’s about to direct
the world tour of Evita; he also directs for The Bill and Doctors.
Bob will attend rehearsals of None But Friends so this is a great
opportunity for the cast to benefit from the wealth of his experience.

We are looking for a boy aged between twelve and fourteen to play
Richard II, who was King of England at the time.  The character is
central to two scenes and has a small but crucial speaking part.
There are also two crowd scenes (and small parts) open to those aged
16 and above; an ability to sing will be an advantage.
The play will be directed by Allan Swift with Tanju Duncan as
Assistant Director.

Those wishing to audition must have have parental consent.
